Ray Kaplan - Fused Dichroic Glass Jewelry
It has been 15 years since I fell in love with the magic of making fused dichroic glass jewelry. This kind of glass was first created by NASA. It has micro-layers of metal oxide which cause the glass to shift colors as the light moves through it. When I first saw this kind of glass, I was blown away by the play of light and color. It reminded me of the beauty of the sunlight dancing in the world and my intention became to channel the beauty that I saw in the world into this art. It is therefore an expression of my love for the world that I have the honor to give form to and share.
This jewelry has multiple layers of dichroic glass that are fused in a kiln for 10 hours, to 1500 degrees multiple times. They are then carved or grinded and some are set into silver or gold plated settings. Some combine both fused glass or gemstones with metalsmithing in silver. Each piece is one of a kind and made with love.
