John Hershey - Watercolor Artist
John Hershey Biography
As a photographer of Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast, I am inspired to translate my experiences and visual acumen into a companion medium.
Having been an occasional watercolorist since instruction at Syracuse University Art School in the 1960s, I was drawn to revive my painting skills when I moved to Bodega Bay in 2014.
This personal revival of such an unique visceral medium, watercolor, was a perfect adjunct to my photography. Both media assimilated the aspects of the other. Composition, color theory, focus, and visual messaging are paramount in both.
My education in advertising design and my career in industrial theater have amplified my expertise in all visual media, most notably watercolor.
Fortunately I have benefited from recent instruction and inspiration by the accomplished watercolorist, Jean Warren.
Adding a new outlook of “abstract realism” and spontaneity to my painting techniques has resulted in a new direction. I would say that now my approach to watercolor is not just to capture the subject or feeling, but to enjoy the unique properties that the medium itself inspires. Creativity in a fluid, unrestricted direction is an art form beyond literal photographic images. Watercolor is the master of ebb and flow surprises.
