“I try to achieve a quality of calmness and serenity in my images while maintaining the freshness of watercolor.”
Watercolor has been my preferred medium for 25 years. I love the luminosity and “happy accidents” that result from using transparent watercolors. It’s also a very portable medium and a joy to use. My favorite subjects are landscapes and seascapes (painted outdoors or from my own sketches and photographs), floral still lifes, and non-objective expressions of color and line. Recently I have been experimenting with painting on textured surfaces created with acrylic texture mediums. I also use watercolor with collage, by staining papers with watercolor and painting over textured paper. Japanese textured and patterned papers feature in my recent collages, and sometimes I start a piece by collaging dried, empty tea bags.
